If you're short on time or planning to visit Porto before heading back, you can start walking directly from the airport.
It's about 2 km from the terminal building to the central route, and 6.5 km to the coastal route (Senda Litoral).
Here, you'll find a detailed route description on how to start your Portuguese Camino from Porto Airport.
Porto Airport to the Central Route of the Portuguese Camino
You exit the airport terminal on the arrivals level and turn right.
Pass the travel buses and continue straight towards a road that appears to be fenced off.
When you reach this road (Map), you will see that the fence is interrupted there. Cross to the other side and turn left.
Route from Porto Airport to the Coastal Path
Just to clarify: The Camino de Santiago known as the Portuguese Coastal Route is actually called Senda Litoral in most parts. Since there is another official coastal route that often doesn’t follow the coast as closely as this one, the names can be a bit confusing.
So if your plan is to walk from Porto to Santiago (or at least to the Spanish border) along the coast, this is the right route for you.
You also exit the terminal building on the arrivals level here, but instead, you turn left.
You reach a sort of roundabout; continue straight ahead.
Follow the road as it goes between parking lots and warehouses.
At the end (km 0.7), you will see a cross street and a building behind a meadow.
Cross the meadow towards the building.
Standing in front of the building, turn left.
At km 0.95, across from a red house, a small street branches off to the right. Follow this street.
The small street reaches a T-junction at km 1.15 and intersects with Rua da Brusela. Turn right there.
The road reaches an intersection 100 meters later. Turn left onto Rua das Bicas.
The road leads you towards the runway; turn right before reaching the runway.
At km 1.7, you reach a roundabout. Continue straight towards the marked tunnel.
You now walk downhill on a sidewalk towards the runway or the tunnel.
The tunnel begins at km 2.1 and is 500 meters long.
At the end of the tunnel, turn left with the road and walk uphill.
CAUTION! After 200 meters, when you reach the next street, do not continue straight. Instead, turn right, heading back in the direction you came from.
From here, there are arrows to guide you. However, these lead to Camping Angeiras. If that is not your destination for the day, you will deviate from this route later.
Follow this street through the village.
At km 3.3, turn left onto a small street, as indicated by an arrow on a utility box.
Follow this street until you reach a cross street after 300 meters, where you will turn left.
After a few meters, there is an arrow on a wall indicating that you should turn right there.
You pass a bar at km 3.6, which is closed on Mondays and open from 10:30 AM to 3 PM and in the evenings. At km 3.8, you reach a street where you turn right and immediately left.
At km 4.9, you reach an intersection with a bar. Continue straight ahead.
At km 6, you reach an intersection.
CAUTION: If you want to go to Camping Orbitur, follow the arrows to the right. If you only want to reach the Coastal Route / the sea, turn left here. The split is indicated here: Map
Continue straight to the left. After less than a hundred meters, a road branches off to the right; that’s the one you take.
From here, you can already see the sea, which you will reach at km 6.5.. Map
Welcome to the Coastal Route!
From now on, remember: if the sea is to your left, you are generally on the right track.
