Are Camino routes and pilgrim hostels inseparably linked?
Yes and no. But actually, no. A Camino route with hotel stays is just as much a Camino as one with dormitory accommodations.
There are no rules about how a Camino should look, and it’s entirely up to you how you choose to spend your nights.
It’s perfectly fine if you can’t or don’t want to sleep in dormitories. Private rooms in hotels or guesthouses are usually not outrageously expensive, especially outside the peak season.
You can find an article explaining the differences between the various types of accommodations here:
How do you book hotels on the Camino de Santiago?
About 90% of hotels, guesthouses, and other private rooms can be found on platforms like booking.com.
However, in smaller towns, there might only be three accommodations with private rooms—one bookable online, another listed only on Google Maps, and the third not even there. In such cases, you’ll either need someone with insider knowledge or spend time digging through guidebooks and apps until you find the place.
San Juan de Ortega hat zum Beispiel nur ein einziges Hotel
If you book a package tour for your Camino de Santiago, you’ll usually stay in hotels, but with a significant markup. Additionally, since these are contracted hotels, they may not always be the best option.
When I plan your Camino, I’ll send you a list of my personal recommendations for hotels and guesthouse rooms—tailored to your preferences and needs. Always as affordable as possible, but as expensive as necessary to ensure your comfort.
Can you receive a Compostela if you stay in hotels?
Yes, that’s no problem at all—you just need to collect the required number of stamps.
Can you stay in luxury hotels on the Camino de Santiago?
Not permanently, no. Hilton, Marriott, and other five-star hotels are mainly found in larger cities, and there aren’t many of them. To stay exclusively in upscale hotels, you would need additional transfers to the route—and in some places, that can be up to 50 km.
When walking the Camino, if you plan to stay at your daily destination, you’ll have to take what’s available—which could sometimes be very basic accommodations.
However, no one is forced to sleep on a church floor. There are always options to plan your stages so that an acceptable room awaits at your destination, or, in some cases, a taxi can be taken.
